While all real mattresses can be used on almost any modern bed, usually timber slats, the combination of mattress and upholstered sprung base as an ensemble is is the ideal sleeping surface, and further extends the mattress life.
The ultimate: a triple-layered ensemble with mattress overlay.

Two designs of upholstered base that are available, that allow the ensemble to finish over a range of heights.

The real base is vastly superior to any comparable foundation, world-wide.
A fully upholstered innerspring unit, boxed inside a timber frame, the life expectancy of the real base is in excess of 30 years.

The low-line base is designed to accommodate base heights below 10 in. - 250 mm., often required for antique and vintage beds.

Real base

Real base compontents:
• fully boxed plantation pine timber frame
• internal fitted Bonnelli coil spring unit
• 18 oz hessian
• 10 oz jute webbing tape 
• cotton felt insulation pad 
• 0.5 in. - 12 mm premium polyurethane sheet foam
• Heavily needled wool felt pad 
• 350 g/m lapper wool wadding pad
• matching damask or herringbone cover
• calico backing cloth 
• fitted with twin wheel castors only
Each castor, load-rated at 50 kilo., is secured with with oversized steel washer.
Single beds are fitted with six castors, double and larger have nine.

King bases are interlocked with chrome cabin-hooks.

Upholstered real base
real base spring and boxed frame.
The real base has a finished height of 12 in. - 30 mm, including the 2 in. - 50mm twin wheel castors, but can be ordered substantially higher.

With a black label real mattress, the total finish height is 22 in. - 550 mm., and an ensemble with an wool and latex overlay, to finish at 24 in. - 600 mm.
Standard height 12”-300 mm.
Available up to 20”- 500 mm on request.
Low-line base
The low-line base is designed to accommodate base heights between 3”- 80mm and up to 10 in. - 25 mm.
Available in matching damask or herringbone fabric.
